Nokia 6 – the comeback Nokia Android phone – has been quite a success for HMD Global , the company that holds the rights to the Nokia brand name. However, more exciting news has surface recently – the iconic Nokia 3310 , the 'indestructible' handset, is rumoured to be making a return and that too in less than 10 days!

Nokia 3310 belongs to the line of classic Nokia mobile phones that were instrumental to the company’s reign over the late 1990s and early 2000s. Most of us have memories of using Nokia handsets, and it was devastating for the fans to see the company’s decline and eventual relegation to a has-been when faced with competition from Apple’s iPhone line .

But with Nokia 3310 rumoured to make a comeback soon, we felt it was apt to take a trip down memory lane, and cherish some of the Nokia phones that fuelled the mobile revolution. There were a lot of Nokia phones (roughly about 450 of them) released over the years, and we picked our favourites – the most memorable, most iconic Nokia phones – from a shortlist  of the best-selling phones of all time.

With news of Nokia 3310 relaunch spreading like wildfire, Nokia fans are looking forward for a modern version of the ‘indestructible’ mobile phone that has reserved a place for itself among everyone’s list of the most iconic tech gadgets. The rumoured price tag of the Nokia 3310  reboot is pegged at EUR 59 (roughly Rs. 4,000), making the upcoming handset an attractive buy for those looking for a secondary handset and the nostalgia factor.

There are many great reasons for the love the iconic Nokia 3310 gets even today. From the long battery life to ‘unbreakable’ body, the handset is considered the most reliable phone you can get. And such was its fame that in 2014, 14 years after the original Nokia 3310 launch, the folks at Nokia pranked fans by announcing a modern retelling of the phone with Windows Phone 8 operating system, 41-megapixel camera etc.

But we don’t really need too many features to continue our tryst with the Nokia 3310. Let's take a trip down memory lane and look at some of the reasons that make the Nokia 3310 the phone every user wants.

Indestructible Nokia 3310 is the nickname given to Nokia’s 3000 series mobile phones and customer review parodies poking fun at their durability and heavy weight. The joke typically manifests itself in image macros, in which the Nokia phone is shown to be an incredibly powerful or destructive force.

On December 4th, 2011, a thread titled “The Terminator of cellphones” [3] was submitted to the /r/geek subreddit that featured an image of a Nokia 1100 phone with a caption claiming it could only be destroyed in the fires of Mordor , a fictional volcano in the fantasy epic The Lord of the Rings . In the thread, Redditor TheBasilisk [4] replied with a link to a photo of a Nokia 3310 naming it “the Witch King,” the chief of the Nazgûl (Ringwraiths).

The Nokia 3310 mobile phone was released in the fourth quarter of 2000. It is considered one of the best selling phones of all time, selling 136 million units according to Nokia’s press release [11] from 2005:

When I was growing up, my Nokia 3310 went through a lot of turmoil and I came to the conclusion that it is one of the most durable phones ever made. It is considered to be virtually indestructible. It has saved lives by literally taking a bullet, has been stomped on and it still manages to work like a charm.

The Nokia 3310 was announced way back in September 2000 and dominated the cell phone market (yes it was called a cell phone back then) for years to come. Seventeen years later, a British veteran is still using his handy Nokia 3310 and, apparently, it has gone through a lot of turmoil. According to the soldier, the phone has survived a war (in Afghanistan and Iraq) and it is still in working condition.

Dave Mitchell, the 49-year-old retired soldier, has been using his Nokia 3310 daily and is attached to it like we are to our dogs. The Daily Mail reports that Dave Mitchell would be ‘distraught' if he had to part ways with his handset. According to Mitchell, the phone has been working well even after 17 years of non-stop use.
