A heart rate monitor has become a feature that separates serious fitness trackers from basic step counters. Your heart rate is a telling metric, providing insight into how hard your heart has to work both while resting and during exercise. For serious athletes and people who want to train using target heart rate zones, a heart rate monitor's accuracy makes a huge difference.

Given the dispute regarding the accuracy of Fitbit's optical heart rate monitors —where some studies claimed that the Charge HR was off by as much as 22 beats per minute — we visited with Dr. Suzanne Steinbaum, a cardiologist and director of Women's Heart Health at the Heart and Vascular Institute of Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. Our mission: test several wrist-based fitness trackers, using a Quinton Cardiac Science Q-Stress test machine (a medical-grade ECG machine) as a control, for comparison.

Based on our testing, most fitness wearables do a fine job of monitoring your heart rate while you're resting or briskly walking, but they can struggle as you start to run and sweat. The Fitbit Charge HR was 4 beats per minute behind the EKG machine, but the Blaze was off by only 2 bpm. Other wrist wearables were in the 2- to 3-bpm variance range.

Learning a new language isn’t easy. It can take years of practice to become fluent and truly comfortable, but sometimes you need help faster than that. Whether it’s for travel or curiosity, being able to quickly translate a few phrases is extremely helpful. These apps make translating on the go extremely fast and easy and will help you bridge any communication gap. As with any computerized translation, these will not be completely accurate, and words taken out of context could end up having different meanings.

Learn more about the Google Translate translator app here:
How to Use the Google Translate Translator App Google Translate is one of the most complete translator apps you can get for free. You can type, draw or say a word into your phone and it will translate it.

For people who study Chinese, Japanese and Korean, Waygo is perfect. Drawing a character is not easy to draw on a phone screen with your finger, so the app accounts for that by allowing you to take a photo of something you don’t understand. Switch the camera from horizontal to vertical to accommodate anything and use the built in flash to make translating in a dark restaurant better. You can also pull images from your photo library. It’s a good idea to save your translations because you only get 10 a month for free.

We spend dozens of hours each year testing the latest Android smartphones in everyday use, and we think the Google Pixel is the best Android phone for most people. It has the fastest performance of any Android phone we’ve tested, a best-in-class 12-megapixel camera, and impressive build quality. It also runs the latest version of Android, which has exclusive features like the voice-activated Google Assistant, and it’s guaranteed to get fast updates to the latest version of Android for two years.

The Samsung Galaxy S7 is the best choice if you’re not on Verizon and prefer to buy your phone from your carrier, or you want a water-resistant phone or one with a microSD card slot. Its 5.1-inch 2560×1440 Super AMOLED screen is still the best and brightest on any phone, but it’s only marginally better than the Pixel. The 12-megapixel main camera takes fantastic shots that are almost as good as the Pixel’s and better than any other Android phone.

The S7’s metal-and-glass body makes it more attractive than most other Android phones, plus it has a microSD card slot and a long-lasting battery. Samsung’s software has improved, as well, but it still has some redundancy and bugs that make us yearn for the Pixel, and it’s a couple Android versions behind.
